"Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs 2" Food~Animal Morphs

Inspired by the soon to be released Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs 2, we've stretched our imaginations to morph our favourite foods with animals to create altogether new creatures.

The imagination of my students is always a delight and an inspiration! Well done everyone!

Rock Pool Collage

Our rock pools are created with brown paper rocks (with sponged paint for texture) and a variety of rock-pool creatures made with acrylic paint thumb prints or polka dot stickers, and fine black marker, all cut out and collaged in layers onto coloured paper.

Scratch-Art Animals

Scratch-Art Action Animals - We loved this!! Although some of the kids had doubts when it came to covering their entire picture with black oil pastel, it was a real 'wow!' moment as we scratched it away to reveal the picture beneath!

Cool Clay Snowmen for A Hot Aussie Christmas!

The summer storms are with us, and it's hot and humid .... if we can't have a White Christmas and build real snowmen, then building them from clay has got to be the next best thing!

Amazing Idea Machines Inspired by Souther Salazar

We looked at  'Alejandro's Idea Machine' by American artist Souther Salazar, noting the detail and free-flowing line work, before completing our own Idea Machine drawings using black marker and white chinagraph pencil on coloured paper.

Here's another version of our Barrier Reef Pictures inspired by Canadian artist Sandra Silberzweig.

Silberzweig Inspired Reef Fish

We looked at 'Sapphire Coral Fish' by Canadian artist Sandra Silberzweig, and talked about her use of bright colours, black outlines and pattern.

We created our own Reef Fish pictures using fluoro paint and oil pastel.
They are beautiful!

Smurfs 'n' Snails.... Viewfinder Movies in Soft Pastel

We used viewfinders to select individual compositions from promotional photos of the Smurfs 2 and Turbo movies, and finished with soft pastel. The tricky part was enlarging the viewfinder selection to fill our whole page!

Great art work everyone!!

How Much Can A Koala Bear?

After a guided drawing lesson to draw our koala, we used water colour pencil, being sure to use short broken lines drawn in the same direction that the fur grows, to create a furry look for our koalas.  We were also careful to leave patches of white fur on the chest and ears to create contrast.

We used the same broken line technique to apply colour to the background, referring to the colour wheel to select colours that we knew would blend well together. Finally we brushed over all our line work with fine brushes and clean water. We were careful to apply our brushwork in the same direction that we drew our lines to dissolve the colour into watercolour while retaining the line work.

Rainbow Lorikeets

Ruby DW
We've used neon oil pastel on black to create our Rainbow Lorikeets.

Extended Drawings

After painting our Grumpy Cat sculptures we used the remaining lesson time to do some extended drawing.
The goal is to complete each picture by creating an environment around each photo.

This is a great project to practice focus and detail. These are some examples using lots of careful detail!

Fun At The Ekka!

Our favourite Ekka moments, using thick and fine black and metallic markers.

Grumpy Cats

Based on the famous Youtube Grumpy Cat, Tardar Sauce, we created our Grumpy Cats with black marker and soft pastel, on a continuous "take a line for a walk" background.

I love how they each have such a distinct personality, even though they are all Grumpy Cats!

In a Parallel World ....

A very imaginative picture to finish the term, with loads of opportunity to get creative! ....

Their challenge was to create a shadow of themselves in a parallel world - a bit like Peter Pan, Alice in Wonderland or the Narnia books. This world exists side by side with ours, and only needs a window or door to step from one into the other.

Like Peter Pan, their shadow can have a life of it's own. Instead of merely copying their real-life body, it should express something important about who they are - perhaps something they love to do like art, music or sport. It might even be symbolic - a lion, a rabbit, a dragon!

This is our last lesson this term - our 2 week winter break starts now. Happy holidays!!

Makedde C (Yr 3)

Cat Sculptures (thank you Andy Warhol!)

After admiring some of Pop artist Andy Warhol's cats we made Cat Sculptures using slotted cardboard. Like Andy's 25 Cats called Sam, each of our cats is brightly coloured and has a very unique personality!
Aren't they terrific?

Rousseau-ish Mixed Media Jungles

We looked at Rousseau's 'Surprised! (Tropical Storm with a Tiger)', especially looking at how the artist makes the viewers feel as though we are inside the picture, with the jungle all around us.

Kaiden S (Yr 4)

Australian Starry Nights

The Starry Night is an iconic Van Gogh painting that we've used as inspiration for our art this week. Here is our mixed-media version of an Australian Starry Night, using colour sticks, stamped acrylic paint, metallic sharpie markers and cut paper.

The kids produced some fabulous work on this project, I just love them!!

Free-Form Pottery

For our pottery piece this term we've made footed free-form pots which have a great oriental-style look.

Lachlan F (Yr 4)

Expressionist Animals

This week our creations are in the style of Franz Marc, featuring our favourite animals in a natural setting, and  using colour to express emotion. We've chosen to use soft pastel, for it's bright rich colour, and because we love getting our hands dirty!

Peacocks for Mother's Day

With Mother's Day coming up this Sunday, we decided to create special Peacock pictures for our Mums.

Our peacocks are just fabulous - I know they'll be treasured by our Mums for many years to come!

Caillou D-F (Yr 5)

3D Chameleons

I absolutely love these! - Great work everyone!

Warm & Cool Color Weavings

It's the last lesson for Term 1, so we're doing something a bit special this week...

Using oil pastels on colored paper backgrounds, we've created two pictures that are the same - except for the colour!

Then we cut them up, and wove them back together.

Finished Snake Coil Pots

Our long-awaited 'Year of the Snake' coil pots are fired and ready for the finishing touches! To see how we made them go my previous post 'Snake Coil Pots'.

We've finished them with water based house paint, and they've come up a treat - well done everyone!

Yasmin H (Yr 4)

Cool Street-Art Names

After discussing the difference between Street Art and vandalism (!) we played with iconic letter-writing styles that are instantly associated with street art, even when done on paper.

I've used this activity as a half lesson (the other half being used to paint our Coil Snake Pots). Although I would have liked more time, and some kids didn't quite get finished, they have still done great work. This is a technique that they can re-work and use any number of times in their independent art work.

Going Cubist!!

Last week we traced photos onto acetate to create a semi-abstract self-portrait. This week we've used the same photos, but this time working directly onto the surface of the photo to abstract it using a cubist perspective.

Eadie O (Yr 1)

Amazing Self-Portraits on Acetate

These amazing pictures were created with a painted paper background and black marker drawings on acetate. Before beginning we looked at examples and discussed the difference between realism (life-like), semi-abstract (altered, but the original subject is still recognizable). We visualized a realism-abstract continuum - on one end is art as realistic as we can make it, on the far end is totally abstract - so changed or totally divorced from the original inspiration that it is no longer recognizable. And in between are infinite levels of the semi-abstract.

This week we are using photos of ourselves as the starting point for a semi-abstract self portrait.

This week we have created Puzzle Tree pictures using oil pastel.

Snake Coil Pots

Clay - one of our favourite lessons each term!

This term we've made coil pots, winding the last coil up to form a snake. Some of the kids went further and wound the last coil around the pot so that their snakes are wrapping themselves around the pot.

The Year of The Snake

In celebration of the Chinese New Year on February 10, 2013 - The Year of the Snake!

Dali Elephants

At the end of last year I took a few weeks off and had a wonderful holiday traveling around Spain. I promised the kids that I'd come home with lots of great ideas for our art class ......

After looking at 'The Elephants' by Spanish Surrealist artist Salvidor Dali we drew our own elephants (and other creatures!) in the style of Dali, with bodies positioned high in the page and balanced on impossibly spindly legs.
