Clay Hanging Decorations

Creating with clay is one of the favourite sessions of our Holiday Art Program.

Before starting, we looked at our door mobile example, noticing the interesting shapes, and the way we need to consider where they will feature in the finished mobile. Pieces hanging lower will be viewed from above, so they need to have interesting detail on the top and sides, whereas pieces higher in the order will be seen from below and will therefore need to look good from this angle. This will be especially important when it comes to finishing each individual piece!  We then decided on our individual themes (garden, ocean and jungle themes featured highly!) and began creating our small sculptures, handmade beads, leaves and swirls.

After kiln firing, all the individual pieces are painted and decorated, before finally coming together as a whole, strung vertically on coloured or natural jute to create our finished mobiles. With all the detailed beads, bells, leaves and swirls they certainly make beautiful doorway decorations!
