Switched On Surrealism

One way to create art in the Surrealist style is to take common, everyday objects or concepts, and combine them in unexpected ways.


We looked at some well known Surrealist pictures in which the artist has used this concept of juxtaposition to recreate the relationship between the real world and the psychological world of dreams.

'The Mae West Room': Salvidor Dali

One of my favourites is the Mae West Room at the Salvidor Dali museum in Figueres near Barcelona. Seeing this amazing installation was a huge tick on my bucket list!!

To get things started I provided one 'real' element, a light bulb, and the students provided the imagination!
They paid particular attention to combining colour, using blending and shading to create a 3D effect in their Surreal creations...
